HELMEN®-Chalking tester

H 100
-
Unique, proven measuring instrument for the quantitative
determination of the degree of chalking resulting from
natural or artificial weathering of coatings.
-
Reliable and objective measuring results.
-
Reproducible independent on the individual person.
-
Easy to handle.
The degree of chalking, a measure for the
amount of particles exposed by chalking, is determined by
the reduction in the intensity of light passing through the
adhesive tape after having applied it to the coating.
Chalking is the appearance of a loosely adherent fine powder
on the surface of a paint coating arising from the
degradation of one ore more of its constituents (DIN EN ISO
4628). The chalking tester which measures the chalking
resulting from natural or artificial weathering of coatings
is based on the analytical principle of nephelometry and the
adhesive tape method according to Helmen.
Application/application areas
-
for the determination of the degree of chalking of colored
and achromatic coatings
-
the test can be carried out in the laboratory, at the
exposure station or directly at the object on site
Features
-
results can be reproduced impartially as no element of
visual judgement applies, i.e. independent of the
individual executing the test
-
superior sensitivity in the most crucial initial chalking
stages compared to other approaches
-
increased accuracy in the case of coatings showing
chalking of colored pigments compared to methods based on
a contrasting substrate
-
there is up to 70 % relative chalking a linear
relationship between the measured value and the quantity
of loosely adhering pigment
Standard extent of delivery
-
1 chalkingtester
-
1 specimen holder
-
2 plastic spatulas
-
4 batteries

Handling
-
calibrate the instrument with the delivered special
adhesive tape
-
apply a piece of adhesive tape to the coating under test
and rub with the plastic spatula until there is an optimum
connection between the tape and the coating
-
remove the piece of tape carefully and uniformly and apply
it to the specimen holder
-
insert the specimen holder in the instrument and read the
degree of chalking in % chalking (relative)

until the stop position is reached and put it afterwards
in the frame above the rubber roller
-
place now
some coating material on the contact area of both rollers
(engraved and rubber roller)
-
disperse the
coating material by turning the engraved rollers at the
weights, by doing so you will reach right at the beginning

On-Line-Gloss-Measuring-System

- Tailored gloss-measuring system for
the industrial area.
- Progressive with up to 1'000
measurements per second.
- With On-Line monitoring of gloss,
brightness and glosshaze during the production.
- 1 up to 8 measuring heads connected
to the same system for reading different data on different
places of the continuous material.
- Multi-angle measuring heads.
- Latest digital technology.
- Reliable results.
ZOL 1190 On-line gloss-measuring systems are based on the
latest digital technology. Because of their modular
structure they can be delivered as individual parts or as
complete system specifically designed in accordance with the
requirements of the customer.
During the production, coating or finishing process the
gloss is measured without contact. Quality assurance
(following ISO) during the manufacture is ensured at any
time by continuous recording of the measured gloss values.
When deviations from the specified quality occur, a warning
signal will be given. By that, the rate of substandard
products can be held at a low level. The system is further
characterised by identical measuring values at the
manufacturing plant and in the laboratory.
Application/application areas
- in the paint, plastics, paper,
foil, metal and further industries
- for all gloss and glosshaze
(reflection haze - scattered light) measurements
- in the manufacture of sheet metal
and floor coverings
- in the finishing industry as during
application of coating of all types, e.g. by coil coating
- integrable in other quality
monitoring systems, e.g. humidity, thickness etc.
