Stargloss Gloss Meter

The New Stargloss Gloss Meter from Paint Test Equipment is a precision gloss measuring instrument. This Gloss Meter is available with multi angles of 20° and 60° which will cater for the requirements of the general painting industries.

Gloss measurement is essential where an aesthetic appearance of the coating finish is required.

Gloss is determined using a Gloss Meter which directs a light (which has a similar wavelength range as the human eye) at a specific angle to the test surface and measuring the amount of reflection. The type of surface to be measured determines the angle used.
The Stargloss Gloss Meter 60° model will measure all of the standard range of paint coatings and the Stargloss Gloss Meter 20° model is used for better differentation of high gloss paints. The combined Stargloss Gloss Meter 20° / 60° model will cater for both applications.

The Stargloss Gloss Meter is small and portable and extremely easy to use, simply place the Stargloss Gloss Meter on the surface to be measured, press the required angle button and the gloss reading will appear on the display. This reading will be held until another reading is taken. The instrument will automatically switch off when not in use.

The Stargloss Gloss Meter uses long life tungsten halogen lamps closely conforming to CIE illuminant C for International Standard compliance.

Multi calibration facility for calibration on different gloss standards.

English, French, Spanish and German language versions are available.

Cross Hatch Cutter

The Paint Test Equipment Cross Hatch Cutter will allow an assessment to be made of the adhesion resistance of coatings to separation from substrates when a right angled lattice pattern is cut into the coating and penetrates through to the substrate.

The coating thickness determines the Cutter size used. The 1mm Cutter is suitable for coatings under 60 microns, the 2mm cutter is suitable for coatings over 60 microns.

Simple operation, each Cross Hatch Cutter has 6 cutting blades spaced either 1mm or 2mm apart, one cutting pass makes 6 cuts in the coating, a second pass at 90° makes a square lattice pattern.

Apply Adhesive Tape over cut section and within 5 minutes remove tape.

Classify the cut area according to the relevant national standard classification guide.

The cutting blades are ground onto 6 cutting sides, so that when one cutting side becomes blunt there are a further 5 cutting sides to use.
Therefore giving a 1/3 rd extra life over conventional 4 sided models.

This Cutter complies with ISO, BS, DIN and ASTM methods of measurement.

HATE Hydraulic Adhesion Tester

The Hate Hydraulic Adhesion Tester is one of the most accurate and versatile adhesion testers currently available.

The adhesion is measured by the required tensile pull on a Dolly glued to the coating surface.

The force is applied through the centre of the Dolly by a hydraulically loaded pin.

Connection to the stainless steel Dolly is easily made with a snap on connector.

The pressure is swivel mounted allowing testing in any position, this is significant as coating breakdown invariably starts at positions that were difficult to reach during surface preparation and application.

Tests can be made on flat, concave and convex surfaces.

Dollies can be supplied for measuring on the external and internal radius.

Conforms to ASTM and ISO methods of measurement with an accuracy of ±1% of pressure gauge FSD.

Maximum value at pull off is recorded by a red drag indicator.

Pencil Hardness Tester Q1001

The Paint Test Equipment Pencil Hardness Tester Part No Q1001 is an effective method to test coatings for their hardness and resistance to scratches and wear.

The test method allows the use of pencils which have a known hardness grade to be moved over the surface to be tested at a fixed angle and pressure.

Design allows tests to be made on surfaces at any angle.
Small and portable can be used in virtually any location.
Traceable test method uses high quality hardness graded pencils.
Excellent repeatability.

The principle of operation uses the pressure applied to allow the pencil lead to just crush and therefore repeatable results of the hardness of the coating can be obtained.

These pencils when passed for a specified number of times on the coating will also allow a wear factor to be determined which is related to the hardness of the pencil used.

Supplied in pouch with box of 12 Quality Pencils, hardness range from 5B to 5H.

ISO Surface Roughness Comparator

A precision Nickel Comparator Plate which conforms to International Standard ISO 8503 for grit and shotblast surface roughness comparison measurement

When steel has been blast cleaned, the surface consists of random irregularities with peaks and valleys that are not easily characterised. Experts have recommended that the profile should be identified as dimpled (shotblast) or angular (gritblast) and that they should be graded as Fine, Medium or Coarse with each grade being defined by limits specified in ISO 8503, these characteristics are considered to give sufficient distinguishing features for most painting requirements.

Easy to use, place the Comparator against an area of the test surface, compare in turn the four sectors of the Comparator against the test surface using the X7 magnifier, placed so that the test surface is viewed simultaneously with a segment of the Comparator, the nearest profile to the Comparator determines the grade.

The different grades are defined as follows. Fine grade profiles equal to segment 1 and up to but excluding segment 2, Medium grade profiles equal to segment 2 and up to but excluding segment 3 and Coarse grade profiles equal to segment 3 and up to but excluding segment 4.

Supplied in a Protective Wallet.

Powdatest Electrostatic High Voltage and Current Meter

The Powdatest Electrostatic High Voltage and Current Meter is a precision DC Voltmeter and DC Current Meter which will measure both electrostatic spray gun high voltages to 100,000 volts and discharge currents 0 to 200 micro amps.

Is your painting process giving intermittent performance, are those difficult locations being coated correctly, do you have occasional rejects which are difficult to explain. Your electrostatic spray system may not be working correctly and using the Powdatest will assist in identifying these and other problems.

With the Powdatest any electrostatic sprayer can now safely and quickly measure the voltage at the spray gun tip. This corona point is where the electrostatic voltage must be maintained at the correct voltage. The spray gun high voltage can be up to 100kV and can be either positive or negative charged. Using the Powdatest the actual gun voltage can be quickly and accurately measured

There can be many reasons why the spray gun voltage may not be correct. Poor calibration, dirt and grease contamination, poor cable connections and cable breakages etc, all of which could affect the actual gun voltage but not be shown on the spray equipment displays. The Powdatest offers a safe, simple and quick test to establish the correct voltage and is particularly useful for quick testing of multi-gun systems.

Actually measures the gun voltage under a load condition thus ensuring that the Electrostatic Gun efficiency is properly tested.

The Powdatest is a combined voltage and current measuring instrument with voltage range to 100kV, resolution to 0.1kV and accuracy ±1%.

Will also measure static discharge currents accurately to a resolution of 0.1 micro amp with a total measuring range of 0 - 200 micro amps. Calibration Certificates having traceability to UKAS are available.

The ability to accurately measure the static discharge current during spraying is very important. The Powdatest will allow the operator to determine the optimum gun position and to detect the amount of powder applied before back ionisation occurs. This is useful to allow spray gun systems with a set discharge current control to be quickly and easily tested.

Supplied with 100KV Measuring Probe, Current Test Cable, Earth Cable, Carrying Case and Battery fitted.

An AC adaptor is available as an optional extra which will allow measurement of AC High Voltages.

Holitech DC Holiday Tester

The Paint Test Equipment Holitech is a DC Holiday Tester, (Holiday Detector, Pinhole Tester, Spark Tester, Jeep Tester) which will test and detect pinholes and flaws in insulated coatings on conductive substrates.

Where coatings have to provide an effective safeguard against corrosion, it is essential that any pinhole or flaws which will eventually lead to corrosion are detected using a Holiday Tester at the earliest possible stage, preferably immediately after the coating application.

The Holitech Holiday Tester applies a test voltage to the coating by moving a brush probe across the surface and where there is either a pinhole or flaw, the voltage will spark through the coating at the flawed location, a red flashing indicator on the Holitech Holiday Tester will flash and an audible alarm will sound. The detected flaw can now be marked for subsequent repair and testing resumed for the remaining surface area. If no flaws are detected the test will therefore be non-destructive.

The value of the test voltage for the Holitech Holiday Tester is determined by the dielectric or voltage strength of the coating thickness. As a rough guide the test voltage can be approximated between 3 to 5 volts per micron of coating thickness, therefore 1000 micron (1mm) would be approx 3kV to 5kV test voltage.

The Holitech Holiday Tester conforms to ISO 2746, ASTM G2-B, ASTM D4787, ASTM G6, NACE RP0188-88, JIS-G3491, JIS G3492, and AS 3894.1 specifications.

Calibration Certificates are available with traceability to UKAS.

Accurate voltage setting on the Holitech Holiday Tester is achieved by adjusting a 10 ten turn fine adjustment front panel control and the exact test voltage is displayed on a digital display with an accuracy of ±1%.

The Holitech Holiday Tester has an automatic fault detection feature installed which ensures that faults are detected at any voltage setting.

The Holitech Holiday Tester is ultra lightweight and possible the lightest Holiday Tester currently on the market, overall weight including batteries with handle is approx 1.6kg.

The test voltage is of low power and does not damage or cause burn marks on the coating.

When using the Holitech Holiday Tester, there are a number of important safety features built in. The test voltage is high impedance and drops to zero when a fault is detected, earth cable is lockable to prevent accidental disconnection. There is a probe discharge path incorporated to prevent any static charge being maintained.

Coatings on concrete as well as steel and iron substrates can be tested using the Holitech Holiday Tester

The Holitech is supplied in a Carrying Case complete with High Voltage Probe Handle, Band Brush Probe, Neck Strap, Earth Cable and Batteries fitted.

Paint Evaluation Tool

The Paint Test Equipment Paint Evaluation Tool (PET) is a Paint Inspection Gauge (PIG)  which will give an exact measurement of the paint thickness on virtually all substrates, eg. Coatings on Concrete, Plastic and Wood etc and individual coats of different colours can be measured in multiple coated applications.

Also can be used in difficult to access locations, on curves and small objects.

Three cutters incorporated catering for paint thickness from 2µm to 2000µm

Angle 45° measures 20µm to 2000µm coating thickness with resolution of 20µm per graticule division.
Angle 26.6° measures 10µm to 1000µm coating thickness with resolution of 10µm per graticule division.
Angle 5.7° measures 2µm to 200µm coating thickness with resolution of 2µm per graticule division.

Easy to use, simply drag the cutting edge of the selected cutter across the coating ensuring the cutter penetrates through to the substrate.

Using the Graticule Microscope with Light Guide supplied, examine one side of the angled cut to measure the exact coating thickness.
Note that each of the above angles all have an 45° angle on the other side so either angle of the single cut can be measured with different resolutions, eg. If 26.6° selected this will give a resolution of 10 micron per graticule division and on the other side of the cut the 45° angle will give a resolution of 20 micron per graticule division.

The Paint Evaluation Tool conforms with ISO 2808-5B, BS EN 3900-CS-5B and ASTM D4138 methods of measurement.

Supplied complete in Carrying Case with Graticule Microscope and Light Guide.
